CSU Bakersfield Takes 4-Set Win In Chicago

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A road victory on Saturday put CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team back in the win column as the Roadrunners earned a 3-1 win over Chicago State in a Western Athletic Conference clash. A trio of `Runners each posted double-doubles while CSUB's back line held strong to the tune of a school record with 97 digs in four sets.

The opening game was close early on, but an 8-4 run spurred by three kills from senior Mattison DeGarmo helped CSUB open a 19-14 lead on the Cougars. Chicago State battled to keep close, but the `Runners finished with a 25-21 victory on freshman Milica Vukobrat's set-point kill. DeGarmo led all `Runners in the opening game with five kills.

Set 2 featured Chicago State creating a slim lead early in the game as the Cougars were able to pull ahead by four points at 10-6. CSUB tied the match at 13-13 and sprinted to a 20-14 lead thanks to an 11-2 run. A small run by Chicago State threatened CSUB's lead, but back-to-back kills by Brooke Boiseau and Emily Hansen put the `Runners up 23-17. Bakersfield took a 2-0 lead on the match after closing out Set 2 with a 25-18 win.

The Cougars pulled away from the `Runners in the middle of Set 3, opening a five-point advantage at 16-11. CSUB but was never able to close the gap as Chicago State made the match score 2-1 with a 25-19 victory.

CSUB jumped out to a quick, 8-3 lead in the fourth set. The `Runners maintained their lead, holding an 18-13 advantage over the Cougars later in the game. Chicago State closed the gap as CSUB took a timeout leading just 21-19. Back-to-back kills from Hansen and Boiseau again gave the `Runners the surge they needed to finish off the set with a 25-22 win and the match with a 3-1 victory.

As a squad, CSUB recorded 97 digs against the Cougars, the most in Bakersfield's Division I history for a four-set match. A trio of `Runners each recorded double-doubles on Saturday in sophomore Desiree Sukhov (15 kills, 12 digs), redshirt junior Sidney Wicks (29 assists, 11 digs), and freshman Leisa Elisaia (25 assists, 12 digs).

With Sukhov's 15 kills leading the way, CSUB had four other `Runners post double-digit kill totals on Saturday in another well-balanced performance. Vukobrat posted 11 kills and three digs for CSUB while DeGarmo chipped in 10 kills, five digs, and four blocks. Boiseau added 10 kills and three blocks in Chicago while Hansen recorded 10 kills for the first time since Sept. 8.

After the road win, CSUB (13-13, 6-7 WAC) has just three matches remaining in the 2018 regular season. The `Runners are in strong position to qualify for the WAC Tournament that CSUB will host over Thanksgiving weekend. Next Saturday, Bakersfield will return to the Icardo Center for Senior Day as CSUB is set to host Grand Canyon Nov. 10. The `Runners will then wrap up with two matches on a road trip to Utah Valley and Seattle U.
