Seniors Lead CSUB To 3-2 Win On Senior Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Two Roadrunner seniors guided the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team to a five-set victory over Grand Canyon on Saturday. In a fitting ending, Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner paced the team to a 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 14-25, 15-6) victory on Senior Day in the pair's final regular-season match in the Icardo Center.

The first set of the match remained tight all the way to the end. CSUB won back-to-back points from 18-18 to gain a little breathing room and eventually went ahead 23-20. GCU responded with a pair of points to pull within one, but the `Runners finished with a 25-23 victory. Seniors Mariner and DeGarmo led the way with four kills and thee kills, respectively, while the latter chipped in two aces.

GCU raced out of the gate to take an early, 7-1 lead on the `Runners in Set 2. CSUB scratched and clawed to get back in the set, drawing as close as three points at 13-16. The Lopes used a 4-0 run to pull away again, but Bakersfield would not go away, using a 5-1 run of its own to make the score 19-22. GCU finished the set off with a 25-20 win to tie the match at one set apiece.

Back-to-back blocks by DeGarmo and freshman Milica Vukobrat pushed CSUB to an early, 9-2 lead in Set 3. CSUB continued its momentum to go ahead 12-4 and surged to a dominant, 25-15 victory. Behind five blocks in the third set alone with DeGarmo contributing to each one, the `Runners took a 2-1 lead on the match.

Set 4 returned to an even trade of points until GCU used a 13-2 run to finish with a 25-14 victory. The win forced a fifth set, pushing CSUB to go the distance for the 11th time this season.

The deciding set went the way of CSUB and, more accurately, the way of DeGarmo. The middle blocker was directly involved with five-straight points to help the `Runners sprint away from the Lopes. DeGarmo stuffed the Lopes to go up 3-2 before recording four-straight kills for CSUB. The senior helped Bakersfield finish strong, taking a dominant, 15-6 win and earning a 5-set victory over GCU.

A native of Castle Rock, Colo., DeGarmo posted her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 blocks. Her blocks total reset the school record for a single-match, moving DeGarmo past former `Runner and current Graduate Assistant Coach Molly O'Hagan, who had previously recorded nine blocks on four separate occasions.

DeGarmo was not the only senior to excel on Senior Day as Mariner led all student-athletes with a game-high 14 kills. CSUB's setters, Sidney Wicks and Leisa Elisaia, both recorded double-doubles for the second-straight match. Redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau added nine kills on Saturday while Bakersfield native Emily Hansen chipped in eight kills and four blocks against GCU.

With the victory, CSUB improved to 14-13 on the year and 7-7 in WAC play. The `Runners have clinched a spot in the 2018 WAC Volleyball Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 22-24 and to be played in the Icardo Center here in Bakersfield.

CSUB will hit the road next week for the team's final two regular-season matches. Bakersfield is currently tied with Utah Valley in the WAC standings as the `Runners and Wolverines are set to battle it out for the fourth seed. Next week's matchups will be crucial as CSUB is headed to play UVU on Thursday, Nov. 15, before closing the regular-season at Seattle U on Saturday, Nov. 17.
