Second Half Headers Propel CSUB to Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing 1-0 to California Baptist at halftime, the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team scored twice in the second half off of headers by Francisco Gomez and Niklas Koerber to come away with a 2-1 win in the season finale at the Main Soccer Field.

Francsico Gomez tied the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute when he took a cross from Ryan Goldsmith and put the ball in the top corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.  Just nine minutes later, Goldsmith crossed the ball from the right side again, this time finding Niklas Koerber for the game-winner.  It was Koerber's third goal of the season, while Goldsmith picked up his third and fourth assists of his junior campaign.  It was the first time since Tom Shepherd had two assists in the season opener that a Roadrunner had multiple assists.

In his final game in a `Runner uniform, Jacob Alatorre picked up his second yellow card with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but CSUB was able to hang on for the victory despite being a man down.

Koerber was active all evening on the offensive end, placing a season-best four shots on goal and ripping a season-high six shots.

The Lancers got on the board first in the 35th minute when Chris Heckenberg stepped in to a short pass at the top of the box from Jordan Lane and blasted it past CSUB keeper Detre Bell.  Bell did make six saves on the evening to pick up his third win of the season.

California Baptist narrowly outshot the home team 17-15 and held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks, but CSUB led where it mattered most when time expired.

Prior to the game, CSUB seniors Alatorre, Sam Gomez and Sebastian Mentel were honored for Senior Night.
