Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

3-pointers Give SJSU An 82-72 Advantage

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team tallied their second consecutive loss on the road after an 82-72 decision at San Jose State University. The Spartans improved to 1-3, 0-0 MWC while the Roadrunners fell 3-2, 0-0 WAC on the year.

"We're going to put this game behind us, but learn from it, and continue to focus on ourselves," said head coach Greg McCall. "These lessons early are what's going to make this team so special when we get into conference. We're getting better each day and making adjustments as we need to."

Bakersfield started the contest slow offensively, allowing San Jose State to take an 11-4 lead, which forced McCall to take an early timeout with 7:04 left in the period. The Roadrunners would use a 12-5 run out of the timeout to tie the game at 16-16 before Raziya Potter sunk two free throws to put the Spartans up 18-16 with 3:14 to play but another 8-5 run would give CSUB a 24-21 lead through the first 10 minutes.

The Spartans made five 3-pointers (5-8) in the second period for a total of 15 points from behind the arch while Bakersfield made five shots, two from behind the arc, in the period. San Jose State outscored the Roadrunners 19-13 and took a 40-37 lead heading into the locker room at the half.

SJSU outscored CSUB 14-12 in the third to extend their lead to five points (54-49) heading into the final period.

Bakersfield was unable to regain the lead in the fourth quarter with the Spartans adding another three 3-pointers to their final 12-22 (54.5%) stat line. Alexxus Gilbert hit a three with 1:16 left in regulation to trim the deficit to seven points (79-72). The Spartans would add three points for the final, 82-72, score.

Three `Runners scored in double figures including Vanessa Austin, Gilbert, and Malaysia McHenry. Austin had a career-high 21 points and tied teammate JJ Johnson and SJSU guard Danae Marquez with a game-high eight rebounds. Gilbert added 17 while McHenry finished with double-digits for the fourth-straight contest with 13 points.

As a team, CSUB took 21 more shots, outscored San Jose State 48-24 in the paint, outrebounded them by 12 (43-31), held a 25-17 edge in points off turnovers, and finished with a 23-5 advantage in second chance points.

"If you just looked at the box score you might think we were the better team this afternoon, but we weren't," explained McCall. "We forced more turnovers, we took more shots, we had the advantage in the paint and in second chance points but our defense was not good. We didn't follow the game plan today. We wanted to cut off their penetration and not allow them to shoot open threes, but we didn't do that and it cost us the game in the end."
