Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Career-bests Highlight CSUB’s 54-point Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team defeated Westcliff University 91-37 at home on Monday night. The Roadrunners would tally their fourth win on the year, nearly break the largest win margin in program history, and improve 4-2, 0-0 WAC behind senior Alexxus Gilbert's career-high 20 points and eight assists.

"I'm really happy with our performance tonight," said head coach Greg McCall. "I thought we handled ourselves pretty well as the game progressed. We were able to polish up on some things that we'll be looking to use later in our schedule."

Westcliff gained possession of the tip to start the game but Bakersfield quickly regained possession and were off to the races. Vanessa Austin made her presence known in the paint finishing the first period with 11 points while Malayasia McHenry had eight points and was perfect from the field (3-3). The Warriors were outscored 5-24 in the first quarter.

Gilbert and Jasmin Dixon each added seven points towards the total 20-7 advantage the group used in the second quarter to extend the lead 44-12 heading into the locker room at the end of the first half.

Bakersfield shot 56.5% in the third to build a 54-point lead, one-point shy of the highest program win margin, heading into the final period of the game. Three players in white were in double-figures including Gilbert (17), Austin (13), and Dixon (11).

In the fourth quarter, McCall took the reins off his veteran group and sat them, giving his more inexperienced group of players more time on the floor. Each Roadrunner that played contributed on the offensive end. Aside from JJ Johnson who played limited minutes (10), every player that stepped on the floor tied or reset their career-best in one or more statistical category.

Five players finished in double figures including Gilbert (20), McHenry (14), Austin and Dixon (13), and Nia Johnson (10). Dixon added a career-high 6 steals while Austin reset her career-best in blocks with two.

"I thought we exceeded my 80-20 rule tonight," added McCall. "We've been constantly harping on the little things – keep the ball out of the middle and force it baseline. I thought they went out and really executed that 85 percent of the time."
