Women’s Basketball Routes Whittier 74-46

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team defeated Whittier College 74-46 at home on Tuesday night. The Roadrunners would clinch their third win on the year and improve 3-1, 0-0 WAC behind senior Malayasia McHenry's season-high 17 points.

Free throws were the difference in the first period. Bakersfield cashed in six points off eight attempts from the line, compared to the Poets who were never made the trip (0-0). Both teams made seven shots in the quarter, but Whittier was able to hit three 3-pointers to keep them in the game down 17-20 at the end of the first.

CSUB started to slowly chip away in the second quarter with 3-pointers of their own from McHenry, Alexxus Gilbert, and Nia Johnson but the visiting team was efficient enough to keep the deficit at single digits and a potential double-digit lead going into the locker room was instead just a 40-31 edge at half.

"There were a few of things that we saw out there in the first half that we weren't satisfied with going into the locker room," said head coach Greg McCall. "I think we made the right adjustments at half and came out aggressive without putting them on the line too often."

Bakersfield started the second half with a different intensity from the first. The defensive pressure was on and the Roadrunners were knocking down shots. Whittier was unable to keep up on either end and the `Runners were able to build a 22-point lead in the third quarter. The Poets were outscored 21-8 in the third and McCall's group cruised to a 61-39 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest.

McCall was able to go deep into his reserves in the fourth quarter and sit McHenry, Gilbert, and Vanessa Austin for the entire period. The trio averaged 23 minutes through three quarters and finished with 17, 12, and 10 points, respectively. CSUB would extend its lead to 28 for the final 74-36 score.

When asked about Austin's double-digit performance, McCall smiled, "It was important to us for her to get going tonight. We wanted to get her a lot of quality touches around the rim within the offense. She was able to play long enough to get a rhythm and put the ball in the basket. We know she's going to be a large part of our success moving forward so it was good to see her get a breakthrough game offensively."
