Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUB, Moore Set Steals Records In Win Over SJSU

BIMINI, The Bahamas – Behind a CSU Bakersfield Division I school record 17 steals, the Roadrunner men's basketball team pulled off a come-from-behind victory against San José State. In CSUB's second game of the Junkanoo Jam, the `Runners erased a 10-point deficit over the final 4:28 to defeat the Spartans in The Bahamas.

From a 7-5 lead for Bakersfield, SJSU went on an 8-2 run to pull ahead of CSUB. On six-straight field goal attempts, the `Runners knocked down as many three-pointers to go ahead of the Spartans with a run of their own. CSUB pushed its advantage up to five points, but SJSU found itself trailing by just one point at the halftime break, 38-37.

The `Runners were hot from the outside in the first half, nailing 9-of-17 three-pointers in the period. Sophomore Jarkel Joiner converted on four of those treys for a game-high 12 points at halftime. Redshirt sophomore Taze Moore only missed one shot in the period, recording 10 points for CSUB.

After Bakersfield went ahead 41-39 in the second half, SJSU used a 13-2 run over four minutes to go ahead by nine. Later, the `Runners made three-straight baskets in the paint to pull with two points with 8:10 left on the clock. The next four minutes went the way of the Spartans, who converted an and-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the game, taking its largest lead at 63-53.

Unfazed by the deficit, the `Runners responded with a 14-3 run of their own spurred by three steals, a couple of transition layups, and two big three-pointers. Redshirt sophomore Justin Edler-Davis drained the three-pointer at 1:33 to give CSUB its first lead since early in the second half.

Edler-Davis, a native of San Diego, Calif., hit a jumper 25 seconds later, but SJSU's Brae Ivey went to the line for three free throws and tied the score at 69 all with 43 seconds remaining. With 20 seconds to go, Edler-Davis nailed his third-straight bucket for CSUB, a deep three-pointer. After a defensive stand, Joiner knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with nine seconds left, making the Spartan's late three-pointer harmless. CSUB held on to win 73-72 in a wild finish on Bimini Island.

As a team, the `Runners recorded 17 steals in the game, resetting CSUB's Division I, single-game record (16, twice, 2011-12 and 2015-16). Moore, who hails from Southaven, Miss. recorded six of those steals, creating a four-way tie for the school record with Stephon Carter (twice) and current `Runners Damiyne Durham (last season).

Joiner led the `Runner offense on Saturday night, knocking down 7-of-13 field goals on the way to a game-high 22 points and three steals. Edler-Davis wound up with 14 points and four rebounds on the evening. Senior Rickey Holden guided CSUB with eight assists to complement six points and three steals. After sitting out Thursday's game, redshirt freshman Darrin Person Jr. contributed eight points, five rebounds, and two steals for the `Runners.

With the win, CSUB improves to 1-1 at the Junkanoo Jam and 2-2 on the season. In the Sunday-afternoon finale of the Bahamian tournament, CSUB will clash with Weber State at 8:30 p.m. (ET). With a win on Sunday and some help on the other side of the round robin, the `Runners could still come away with the tournament title.
