CSUB Comeback Falls Short At Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – A valiant comeback effort came up just short as CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team fell to Utah Valley on Thursday night. The Roadrunners nearly sent the match to the fifth set, but a late surge by the Wolverines helped UVU seal a 3-1 victory on their home court.

The first set was tight through the finish. UVU found itself ahead 15-13 at the media timeout, but CSUB took a 20-19 lead, going ahead of the Wolverines for the first time since being up 3-2. From a 21-20 lead for the `Runners, UVU won four-straight points to set up three set-point opportunities. The Wolverines finished off the set with a 25-22 victory to go ahead by one game. Senior Briannah Mariner led all `Runners with five kills in the game.

CSUB responded well to take the second set, 25-20. Leading 19-18, the `Runners won six of the final eight points to tie the match up at one game apiece. Sophomore Desiree Sukhov paced CSUB with five kills and three digs in Set 2.

The `Runners held an 11-9 advantage in the third set, but UVU rallied to go ahead 15-12. CSUB never let the Wolverines pull far ahead, but the home team was able to squeak out a 25-23 win to go up a set. Mariner remained hot in the third set, recording six more kills for Bakersfield.

In an exciting fourth set, CSUB found itself trailing 7-5 early on. The `Runners went on an 8-2 run to go ahead 15-9 and continued to lead UVU at 20-15. Bakersfield looked primed to send the match to the deciding game, but UVU closed the set on a run, taking the fourth set 25-23 and winning the match 3-1.

The `Runners put together one of their stronger hitting performances in recent past, posting a team attack percentage of .269. Bakersfield struggled to slow down the Western Athletic Conference's top hitter in Kazna Tarawhiti, who tallied 25 kills on the night.

CSUB's offense was led by senior Briannah Mariner, who recorded 15 kills on a .312 hitting percentage. Sophomore Desiree Sukhov extended her team-lead with another double-double (14 kills, 12 digs), while senior Mattison DeGarmo chipped in 13 kills and four blocks against the Wolverines.

Bakersfield (14-14, 7-8 WAC) will head to Seattle on Friday to prepare for a Saturday afternoon clash with Seattle U. The `Runners and Redhawks are set to close the regular season before CSUB returns home to host the WAC Tournament next week.
