CSUB Rally Comes Up Short In Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A late rally by the Roadrunner volleyball team came up short as CSU Bakersfield fell in its Western Athletic Conference match on Thursday. Facing a hot team on the road, CSUB dropped a 3-1 decision (15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-25) to Kansas City despite a strong effort from senior Briannah Mariner.

UMKC jumped out to a narrow lead early in the first set before an 8-1 run helped the Roos sprint ahead to a 20-8 advantage. Despite a surge at the end of the set from CSUB, Kansas City took the first set, 25-15.

The second set was tight most of the way with the teams finding nine ties along the way to a score of 16-16. From there, a 4-0 run by the Roos opened up some breathing room, but the `Runners would not go away. Trailing 20-23, CSUB answered with a pair of kills from Mariner and Milica Vukobrat to draw within one point. The `Runners fended off one set point opportunity, but UMKC closed out the game with a 25-23 win.

After another close set early in Game 3, UMKC used a 10-2 run to take a 21-14 lead over the `Runners. Behind a spark from redshirt freshman Tasha Skabelund, CSUB battled back to tie the score at 23-23. Bakersfield won 11 of the final 13 points, including the set-clinching kill by Vukobrat, to extend the match with a 25-23 victory of its own.

The Roos jumped out to a quick, 11-2 lead over the `Runners in the fourth set. CSUB clawed back into the game with a 7-1 run, but UMKC finished strong, taking the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.

On the match, the `Runners were led by Mariner, a senior outside hitter, who posted 14 kills. Fellow senior Mattison DeGarmo chipped in eight kills and three blocks while Vukobrat, a native of Serbia, had seven kills, four digs, and two blocks for CSUB. Redshirt junior Sidney Wicks tallied 22 assists and 18 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.

As a squad, Bakersfield registered seven more service aces on Thursday night. The performance brought CSUB's season total to 140 aces, moving the `Runners into 10th in the CSU Bakersfield's Division I, single-season history. CSUB came into the match ranked 60th in the nation in aces and continues to pile on numbers in the category.

The `Runners (12-13, 5-7 WAC) will travel to Chicago on Friday to prepare for a Saturday-afternoon clash with Chicago State (8-20, 2-9 WAC). First serve in Illinois is schedule for 10 a.m. (PT). The match will not be live streamed, but there will be a live radio broadcast as well as live stats.
