Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

`Runners Rally To Remain Perfect At Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing two sets to one to Western Athletic Conference foe Seattle U, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team's perfect record in the Icardo Center looked to be in eminent danger. The Roadrunners rallied for a five-set victory (23-25, 25-22, 15-25, 27-25, 15-12) over the Redhawks behind redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau's 20 kills, improving CSUB's record in front of its home crowd to 8-0 on the year.

CSUB jumped out to a quick, 5-0 lead in Game 1, but Seattle U fought back and took its first lead of the match at 11-10. The `Runners held a 15-13 advantage at the media timeout, but the Redhawks answered back and surged to a 24-20 lead. Bakersfield fended off three-straight set points before Seattle U eventually took the first set 25-23. Senior Briannah Mariner led all student-athletes with five kills in the game.

Set 2 was tight from start to finish. Trailing 15-14, CSUB went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 19-15. From 22-20, Boiseau recorded a kill, followed by a kill by junior Rafa Bonifacio to give CSUB set point. Seattle U answered back with a pair of points, but Boiseau finished the game, 25-22, with another kill.

Seattle U sprinted to an 8-2 lead in the third set, then extended its advantage to nine points at 14-5. CSUB went on a 4-1 run to make the score 15-9, but the Redhawks would not relent. SU went on to take a dominant, 25-15 victory in the game and a 2-1 lead on the match.

In a tight fourth set, Seattle U used a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-9. The `Runners answered with a 7-3 run of their own to take a 19-18 lead. Six big kills from Bonifacio helped CSUB swing momentum in the heart of the set. CSUB gained a 23-21 lead, then a Desiree Sukhov kill set up a pair of set points at 24-22, but back-to-back Redhawk blocks tied the score at 24-24. From 25-25, a kill by Sukhov followed by an SU error sealed a 27-25 victory, sending the match to the deciding set.

Seattle U maintained a small, but significant lead on CSUB in the fifth set until a kill by Bonifacio and back-to-back kills by Boiseau put CSUB ahead 12-11. The pair of `Runners then combined for a block to make to bring CSUB within just two points. From 13-12, Bonifacio got a kill to set up match point and Boiseau and Mariner finished the match with a block.

Boiseau's 20 kills is a season-high for any `Runner and marks the first 20-kill match for CSUB since Haylee Roberts recorded 22 against Valparaiso on Sept. 1, 2017. The middle blocker from Scottsdale, Ariz. hit efficiently with a .529 clip on the night while fellow middle blocker Mattison DeGarmo added 10 kills against Seattle U.

Coming off the bench, Bonifacio recorded 14 kills in just four sets for the `Runners. Setters Sidney Wicks and Leisa Elisaia tallied 35 assists and 25 assists, respectively. Sophomore libero Krista Hernandez posted a cool 27 digs from the back row.

The `Runners (11-7, 4-1 WAC) are headed back on the road this week only to return for a Saturday home match. Bakersfield will clash with Grand Canyon in Phoenix on Thursday, Oct. 11, before welcoming California Baptist to the Icardo Center on Oct. 13. The `Runners will be looking to exact revenge for a 3-2 loss on the road to CBU just a week ago.
