`Runner Rally Comes Up Short In Phoenix

PHOENIX – A slow start found the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team in a 2-0 hole on the road against Grand Canyon on Thursday night. Despite a valiant comeback effort, the Roadrunners fell to the Lopes in five sets (13-25, 27-29, 25-16, 25-20, 12-15).

GCU jumped out to a quick, 7-2 lead in the first set, but the `Runners went on a 5-1 run to climb back into the game. The Lopes answered back and CSUB was forced to call a timeout trailing 13-7. GCU surged to the end and took a 25-13 victory behind 14 unforced errors by the `Runners.

The second set of the match turned out to be CSUB's longest of the season. GCU led 15-14 at the media timeout and the game remained tight all the way with 15 ties. The `Runners found themselves down 24-22 and ended up fending off five set points, but the Lopes got the final kill they needed to finish the game off 29-27.

Revitalized after the intermission, CSUB jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set. The home team responded with a 5-0 run to pull within one point. From a 15-14 lead, CSUB went on a 10-2 run to finish set with a 25-16 victory. Junior Rafa Bonifacio led the `Runner attack, recording eight kills in the third set alone.

The `Runners went down 7-5 in Set 4, but a 7-1 run put CSUB ahead 12-9. The game remained tight to the final points. From a 19-18 advantage, CSUB rode the defense of Emily Hansen and Ally Barber, who combined on a pair of big blocks down the stretch, allowing the `Runners to finish off the set 25-20. With the Game-4 victory, Bakersfield found itself headed to the fifth set for the fifth time in its last six matches.

In the final set, GCU gained a little bit of breathing room, leading CSUB 9-6. The `Runners pushed back to win the next two points to keep the game close. CSUB tied the match at 12-12 on a GCU attack error, but the Lopes won the next three points to take the match 3-2 and the set 15-12.

Bonifacio, a native of Brazil, led the way with season-highs in kills (16) and digs (11) for her first double-double of the year. Senior Mattison DeGarmo came up one kill short of her career-high with 15 against the Lopes. Hansen and Barber were forces at the net all night, tallying career-highs with seven blocks each. Taking on the bulk of the work, setter Sidney Wicks raised her career-high to 44 assists on Thursday night.

With the loss, CSUB fell to 11-8 (4-2 WAC) on the year, but will return to the comforts of the Icardo Center for its next match. The `Runners will put their perfect, 8-0 record at home this season on the line when California Baptist (14-5, 5-2 WAC) comes to Bakersfield for a rematch of last Saturday's thriller. This Saturday, CSUB will look to avenge its loss to CBU and to continue its best start of the season at home in the school's Division I history.
