Volleyball Tallies First Conference Loss At CBU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield volleyball team tallied their first loss in Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners rallied to clinch set four and force a final set to 15 but came up short. The final 3-2 (27-25, 17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 12-15) decision snapped an unbeaten streak of six matches.

California Baptist improved to 13-5, 4-2 WAC on the season while Bakersfield fell 10-7, 3-1 WAC.

Roadrunners controlled most of the first set up until CBU opened a 6-1 run that tied the score 10-10. There was a seven-point stretch following where the score went back and forth between the two clubs. Down three points, CSUB made three kills out of a timeout to tie the score 18-18. It took three set points to clinch Set 1, 27-25.

The Lancers controlled the following two sets of the contest. Despite a late push in both sets, California Baptist earned a 25-17 victory in Set 2 and Set 3 and had a .309 hitting average entering the fourth set.

Bakersfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead in Set 4, but the Lancers responded with their own 6-2 run that brought the score within two. CBU forces three set points, but the Roadrunners took the set 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.

Trailing California Baptist 8-4 in the fifth set and then later 12-14, the Roadrunners were unable to clinch the come-from-behind road win on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Briannah Mariner led all `Runners with 18 kills while Milica Vukobrat recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Brooke Boiseau chipped in seven kills and a team-best five blocks. Sidney Wicks, CSUB's starting setter, had 40 assists and 14 digs against California Baptist.

CSU Bakersfield will continue WAC action on Monday with a matchup against Seattle U (8-9, 1-3 WAC). The `Runners and will face off at 7 p.m.
