CSUB Comeback Falls Short

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team was unable to come back from a 2-0 first half deficit and recorded their eighth loss of the season in a 4-3 decision against Seattle University at Main Soccer Field on Friday. The Redhawks improved to 4-7-2, 2-1 WAC while the Roadrunners fell 4-8-0, 1-2 WAC on the year.

"We dug ourselves into a 2-0 deficit in the first half," said head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "But I'm proud of the way our girls battled and finished the contest."

Seattle U opened scoring in the 33rd minute of the contest when Isabelle Butterfield sent a shot received from teammate Jessie Ray past the Bakersfield keeper. Holly Rothering connected with the right corner in the 39th minute to extend the lead 2-0 in the first half.

CSUB got its offense going 10 minutes into the second half when Aminah Settles chipped in a deflected ball from freshman center back Caitlin Goetjen. The Redhawks responded five minutes later with a goal of their own from Rachel Bowler to lift the deficit back to two goals. The SU goal in the 62nd minute from Bowler would prove to be the game-winner as the Roadrunners scored in the 78th and 82nd minute to pull within one, but could not get the equalizer as the clock wound down.

Goetjen scored her first collegiate goal in her young career while Settles recorded her fourth and fifth goals of the season and has a total of 25 career goals and 61 career points, a Division I program record. Bakersfield goalkeeper Cass Tymchen got her first appearance and start against Seattle U. She tallied a game-high six saves on 19 shots faced.

"We're going to have to play like we did in the last 45 minutes of the match if we want to be successful in WAC," added Vecchio."
