`Runners Knock Off Chicago State In Icardo Center

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield volleyball team got back on track with a four-set victory in the Icardo Center on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners charged out to a two-set lead and eventually finished the job, defeating Western Athletic Conference foe Chicago State 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18).

The `Runners gained an 11-8 lead in the first set, forcing a Chicago State timeout. From 14-12, CSUB went on an 8-0 run to blow the game open. Bakersfield finished the game strong and Mattison DeGarmo's solo block capped a 25-15 victory in the opening set.

Set 2 was a tight battle until CSUB surged to the end. A 5-2 run to close the game helped the `Runners take a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 lead on the match. Sophomore Desiree Sukhov had 11 digs through the first two sets for CSUB.

In the third set, the `Runners extended their lead to as many as six points at 17-11, but Chicago State answered back with an 11-2 run to take a 22-19 lead over Bakersfield. The Cougars went ahead 24-21 and CSUB fended off a pair of set points, but Chicago State forced a fourth set, 25-23.

Set 4 fared similarly to the second game with both teams battling for position. From a 13-11 lead for the `Runners, CSUB opened the game up a bit, but Chicago State closed the gap again to make the score 17-15. The `Runners finished strong with an 8-3 run to seal the deal, 25-18.

Milica Vukobrat, a freshman from Serbia, posted a season-high 14 kills to pace all student-athletes on Saturday. Sukhov, a native of Murrieta, Calif., tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and a career-high 19 digs.

On the defensive end, redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau's five block assists led the `Runners, who recorded 10 blocks as a squad. CSUB outhit the Cougars .259 to .101 as the `Runners recorded just 15 attack errors to CSU's 29.

With the win, the `Runners improved to 12-12 on the year and 5-6 in WAC play. CSUB will hit the road next week for a pair of conference matches. The `Runners will get quick rematches with both of this week's opponents as CSUB and Kansas City will collide on Thursday before Bakersfield heads to play Chicago State on Saturday.
