Roadrunners Draw On Senior Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team forced a 3-3 double-overtime draw against Grand Canyon University (6-12-2, 3-3-2 WAC) in their regular-season finale on Friday.

"I am extremely proud of this team and this senior class," said head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "This group just keeps getting better and better each game."

The Roadrunners honored nine graduating players – Jordin Bartel, Mel Cea, Sabrina Delgado, Elle Estes, Coral Lake, Claire Nelson, Aminah Settles, Tori VandeHoef and Haley Vicente.

Bakersfield opened scoring in the first minute of the contest when VandeHoef tallied her third career goal off a cross played into the box by Settles, her fourth assist this season.

What looked like a breakaway goal for Settles and a 2-0 lead for the Roadrunners in the 19th minute ended with a GCU sliding tackle from behind inside the penalty box – no foul was called. A foul called in the penalty box on CSUB five minutes later set up Camryn Larson's fifth goal on the year and knotted the score 1-1. The score would hold through the first half.

A CSUB goal kick changed to a GCU corner at the 46:36 minute-mark set up Larson for her sixth goal of the season. McKenzie Cook sent the service ball and was credited the assist on goal. Settles recorded her eighth goal and equalized the score in the 53rd minute. Cook regained the lead for Grand Canyon two minutes later while Larson picked up her second assist this season. Eszter Toth sent a curling shot off the foot of a GCU defender into the net at 71:58 to tie the score, 3-3. Her goal would hold through regulation.

Bakersfield dominated period one, two and the extra periods, but were unable to tally the golden goal. The Roadrunners finished the match with the advantage in corners (12-5), shots (18-15) and shots on goal (11-9).

"I felt we were the better team," added Vecchio. "Especially after we tied the game and both overtimes, but it's hard to win at this level when you give up three goals."
