Roadrunners Edged 4-3 In PKs

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team (No. 6 seed) fell to No. 3 seed UT Rio Grande Valley, 4-3, in penalty kicks. The Roadrunners finish the 2018 season with a 0-0 double-overtime draw and four-game unbeaten streak.

"We played a great game and I felt we deserved better today," said head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "It is always tough to go out on penalty kicks."

CSUB created the first scoring opportunity in the 21st minute when Aryana Harvey sent a shot at the goalkeeper that forced a corner. UTRGV had a chance to take the lead four minutes later when a shot by Katherine Stockley hit the crossbar. The Roadrunners had another scoring opportunity snuffed at 26:34. Sabrina Delgado's shot on goal set up two back-to-back corners. The contest was played to a scoreless first half despite Bakersfield holding a 4-1 advantage in corners.

The second period was similar to the first; scoreless with Bakersfield dominating in the attacking third. The Vaqueros, unable to create a corner in the second half of the match, trailed 8-1 through 90 minutes of regulation.

A soft shot sent in the box by Emily Zapata in the 96th minute was easily handled by Jordan Bertram, her fourth save in the contest. Sophie Freeman followed up with a shot of her own at 97:35 but Kinga Szemik was there to pick up her fourth save. The 0-0 score would hold through the next two extra periods.

"The back line, led by Coral Lake and Caitlin Goetjen were outstanding and we were very dangerous going forward," explained Vecchio. "I am proud of our coaching staff for continuing to make our kids better game after game. We peaked at the right time and were fit and healthy."

In the shootout, Szemik turned aside CSUB's sixth attempt to keep the score at 3-3 just before Diana Ansah squeaked her penalty kick passed Bertram for the win.

"Finally, I want to thank the seniors for their leadership this season and their contribution over the last four years," added Vecchio.
