`Runners Fall Short In Marathon Match Against UMKC

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A hard-fought match resulted in a tough loss for the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team on Thursday night. The Roadrunners dropped a pair of extremely close sets in the four-set loss against Kansas City (30-32, 25-22, 26-28, 19-25).

The opening set turned out to be the longest of the season for the `Runners. CSUB and UMKC wound up tied 12 times in the game including nine times from a 21-21 tie. After 30-30, the Roos got back-to-back kills to finish off the marathon set, 32-30.

UMKC jumped out to an 8-2 lead in Set 2. CSUB fought back to stay close and tied the match up at 14 points apiece. The Roos went ahead 20-18, but the `Runners answered right back to tie the set at 20 all. Bakersfield won five of the next seven points while Leisa Elisaia finished the set off with an ace, CSUB's seventh of the match to that point.

The third set was another tight one and the two teams found themselves tied at 17-17. The `Runners took a small lead at 22-19, but UMKC climbed back in to tie the score at 23-23. UMKC earned a set point opportunity at 25-24, but the `Runners tied the game again at 25 and 26. Alas, a pair of `Runner errors gave UMKC the set, 28-26.

In the fourth set, Kansas City used a 5-1 run to gain space at 16-11. The Roos maintained their lead and finished the match with a 25-19 victory. On the match, UMKC was led by Tyrecia Lukes' 13 kills and seven blocks.

As a team, CSUB recorded 13 service aces on Thursday night, just one shy of the school's Division I four-set match record. Five of those aces came from junior Rafa Bonifacio while sophomore Desiree Sukhov chipped in four of her own.

A quartet of `Runners paced Bakersfield's offense, each of whom tallied 10+ kills: senior Mattison DeGarmo (12), freshman Milica Vukobrat (11), senior Briannah Mariner (11), and redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau (10). Elisaia, a freshman setter, tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 23 assists and 15 digs.

The `Runners (11-12, 4-6 WAC) will have a day off before returning to the Kern Schools Court in the Icardo Center for another Western Athletic Conference matchup. CSUB is set to square off against Chicago State (8-18, 2-8 WAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
