`Runners Take Loss At NM State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team faced off against a tough foe in NM State on Saturday as the Roadrunners suffered a sweep on the road. Bakersfield dropped the Western Athletic Conference contest by scores of 13-25, 20-25, and 20-25.

Early in the first set, the Aggies used a 7-2 run to take a 14-10 lead and force a `Runner timeout. NM State continued to surge, reaching a 21-10 advantage over CSUB. The `Runners were unable to rally and fell, 25-13, in the opening game.

The Aggies jumped out to another early lead in Set 2, building an 8-2 lead on CSUB. The `Runners answered back with a 6-1 run to pull within one point of their host. The two teams found themselves tied up at 15-15, but the Aggies were able to put together a 4-0 run to gain breathing room. Points were traded to the end and NM State claimed Set 2, 25-20.

NMSU went ahead 10-4 in the third set and kept the `Runners at a distance. The Aggies extended their lead to as many as nine points at 20-11, but CSUB would not go down without a fight. Bakersfield went on a 6-1 run to draw as close as four points at 21-17. Senior Mattison DeGarmo followed up a kill with a service ace to pull the `Runners within three points at 22-19. The Aggies would once again finish strong to close out the set with another 25-20 victory.

Redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau and junior Rafa Bonifacio led the `Runners with six kills each. Bonifacio, a native of Brazil, also chipped in six digs for CSUB. Freshman Leisa Elisaia paced Bakersfield with 16 assists against the Aggies.

The `Runners (11-11, 4-5 WAC) are headed home for a pair of WAC matches next week. CSUB hosts Kansas City on Thursday, Oct. 25, before closing out the week with a Saturday afternoon meeting with Chicago State.
