Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Koerber’s Goal Not Enough at UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas Niklas Koerber's second goal of the 2018 season gave the CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team an early 1-0 lead, but the Roadrunner defense was unable to preserve it as the Roadrunners fell 2-1 to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

The opening 20 minutes featured both teams feeling each other out. The `Runners finally broke through on a great through ball by Niall Owens, which led to a pass across the face of the goal by Ryan Goldsmith. Koerber found Goldsmith's cross and buried it in the back of the net to put the `Runners ahead 1-0.

CSUB's advantage would be short lived as UTRGV answered back with a goal of its own six minutes later. Jakko Hietikko netted his fourth goal of the season to tie the score at one goal apiece.

With just over three minutes left in the first half, a UTRGV foul in the box set the `Runners up with a penalty kick opportunity. Goalkeeper Andy Rios saved sophomore Tom Shepard's attempt. The Vaqueros finished strong with a goal 40 seconds before halftime to go ahead of CSUB 2-1.

The CSUB offense fired six shots in the second half at Rios, forced him to make two saves, but were unable to score the equalizer.  Both teams finished the match with 13 shots, while the Vaqueros held a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal.

The `Runners (4-9-1, 2-4-1 WAC) will leave Edinburg, Texas and head north to San Antonio for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Western Athletic Conference affiliate member Incarnate Word. Kickoff on Sunday is scheduled for 11 a.m. (PT).
