Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

CSUB Drops First Home Match Of Season

Bakersfield, Calif. – For the sixth time in the last seven matches, CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team went to the fifth and deciding set. In Saturday's Western Athletic Conference contest, California Baptist got the best of the Roadrunners (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 11-15), handing CSUB its first home loss of the season after an 8-0 start in the Icardo Center.

The first set turned out to be CSUB's closest of the year, featuring 21 tie scores. From a 23-23 tie, an attack error by CBU gave the `Runners set point. Redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau and sophomore Emily Hansen combined for a huge block to seal the set, 25-23. Senior Mattison DeGarmo led the way for the `Runners in the first game with four kills while Boiseau had three blocks.

In Set 2, the Lancers earned a 12-8 advantage, but Bakersfield later responded with a 5-1 run to go ahead 15-14. The rest of the set remained tight, but CBU gained a two-point lead at 23-21. The Lancers finished strong, taking the set 25-22 and tying the match at one set apiece.

In another closely contested game, CSUB used a 3-0 run to take a 12-9 lead in the third set. CBU came out of a timeout revitalized and used a 7-0 run to take the lead right back. The `Runners fought to the end of the game, but the Lancers took a 2-1 match lead on a 25-20 victory in the set.

The fourth set was nearly as close as the first with 14 tie scores. CBU took a slim lead at 20-19, but a Rafa Bonifacio kill tied the score again. After two more ties Milica Vukobrat's kill put the `Runners ahead 23-22. CSUB's two seniors, Briannah Mariner and Mattison DeGarmo, followed that up with a block that gave CSUB two set point opportunities. An attack error by the Lancers ended the thought of a rally as CSUB won Set 4, 25-22.

In the deciding set, CBU used a 3-0 lead to go up 6-4. The Lancers were able to keep a two-point lead for most of the rest of the game. From 11-10, CBU won four of the final five points to earn a 15-11 set win and a 3-2 victory on the match.

DeGarmo, a native of Castle Rock, Colo., led the `Runners with 14 kills to go with four blocks. A junior transfer, Bonifacio recorded her second-straight double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs against the Lancers. Mariner, who hails from Salt Lake City, Utah, tallied 13 kills, six digs, and four blocks for CSUB. Vukobrat, a Serbian freshman, had eight kills and seven digs on Saturday.

The `Runners (11-9, 4-3 WAC) will hit the road next week for a pair of matches against two of the WAC's top teams. CSUB will take on UT Rio Grande Valley Thursday, Oct. 18, before rounding out the weekend at NM State on Saturday.
