Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Win WAC Opener Against Utah Valley

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team began WAC play with a victory over Utah Valley. Roadrunners defense came out stronger holding the Wolverines to only 16 shots in the game.

"We fought through adversity," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB's women's basketball team. "We did some good things, made some big-time shots. Hats off to Utah valley they are a tough team I knew it was going to be a tough game. Defensively, I thought we did a good job I thought we did a really good job against their zone."

`Runners started out slow in the first quarter and got on the board with a shot behind the arc by junior Alexxus Gilbert to give CSUB their first three points after the first two minutes. Bakersfield trailed by five at the end of the first quarter, 17-12. A couple of 3-pointers would give CSUB enough confidence to gain its first lead with 49 seconds left in the second quarter and go into halftime with a three point lead, 33-30. Gilbert led the first half with 9 points and 3 assists. `Runners increased their field goal percentage by 27% in the first to a solid 40 % in the second quarter.

A jumper and a layup to start the third quarter from CSUB would create enough pressure to keep Utah Valley from scoring from the field until the final two minutes. Bakersfield's defense remained dominant throughout the entire quarter as the Wolverines only scored 11% from the field. However, Utah did manage to secure 10 points off of foul shots. `Runners took their largest lead 47-39 in the final 53 seconds and ended the quarter 49-44 with 50% of their points being from 3-pointers.

Utah Valley began the fourth quarter with three points but redshirt Jazmine Johnson was able to answer right back with a layup. The Wolverines were able to close the gap and tie the game at 55 points with 2:47 minutes left in the game and again at 57 points with both teams going to the line. Johnson's 3-pointer gave CSUB a somewhat worry-free lead even as Utah went back to the line and only sank in one point. The `Runners ended the game with a five point advantage over the Wolverines, 63-58.

Gilbert led the Roadrunners with 13 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds while senior Alize Lofton scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds in the game. Johnson came right behind filled the stat sheets with 11 points, 4 assists, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. As a team, Bakersfield shot 39.23% (22-of-56) from the field with 45.5% of its shots coming from 3-pointers and 22 in the paint.

The `Runners will head out to the road for the two WAC matches against UTRGV on Jan. 11 and New Mexico State on Jan. 13. Live stats and video can be found on the women's schedule page.
