Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Win In Overtime Against UTRGV

EDINBURG, TEXAS – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team was once down by 12 points but a good pep talk after the first half would give the Roadrunners enough momentum to come back and win in overtime 67-64 against UTRGV. `Runners improve their record 8-8, 2-0 (WAC).

A layup from freshman Vanessa Austin would get the game flowing as both teams kept their defense strong and ended in a tie with 10 points each in the first quarter. Vaqueros came firing shots in the second quarter and go on a 12-0 run until Bakersfield managed to get their offense back together and go on an 8-0 run. However, Vaqueros quickly got back into the game and took the lead 26-18 into halftime. Junior Alexxus Gilbert led the `Runners after two quarters with six points.

A change of pace in the third quarter for the `Runners was all they needed to gain two 3 pointers and a layup to get back into the game and then go on to a 11-3 run to cut UTRGV's lead by one point before the second timeout. CSUB takes its first lead since late in the first quarter with 1:00 left in the third quarter but the Vaqueros go to the line and get one more point to make it a tied game at the end of the third, 36-36.

CSUB catches fire on the floor and get two 3-pointers to give CSUB a solid lead, 46-40. `Runners added another 3-pointer and take its biggest lead at 54-47. However, the Vaqueros were not having it and came back to tie the game 58-58 to force the game into overtime.

First you don't succeed try and try again as redshirt senior Jazmyne Bartee rebounds twice before getting the layup and drawing the foul to earn three points for CSUB in the start of overtime. UTRGV draws the fouls and gets CSUB to the line twice to gain a six point lead before UTRGV starts closing the gap at 67-64. Fortunately, CSUB defense held strong and won in overtime.

Gilbert led the Roadrunners with 16 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assists and 1 steal. Bartee had another double-double for the season with a career high of 19 rebounds and 10 points. As a team, Bakersfield shot 29.7% (19-of-64) from the field and had 14 points in the paint. CSUB and the Vaqueros tied the game five times before CSUB gained the ultimate lead of the night.
