Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CSUB defeat the Redhawks In True `Runner Fashion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's Women's basketball team played in front of a ruckus crowd of local school girls for the Roadrunners National Girls and Women's in Sports day and their annual black out game to take a solid WAC victory against Seattle U, 75-68. Not only did the `Runners win but they also made CSUB history scoring the most points in one period which was previously 29 points versus GCU (2/4/17).

"I thought we did a really good job," said Greg McCall head coach of the `Runners. "I think I said it earlier that it was going to have to be a collective effort for us to be able to stop their top scorer. We put everyone on her just trying to figure out different ways to make sure we just kept her occupied at all times because we knew she was going to be the one that carried them."

CSUB came out firing shots early before the first media timeout and led 19-8 and then continued its run to take the biggest first quarter lead in school's history since switching from halves after the 2014-15 season.  The `Runners ended the first period, 35-22 scoring 86% (6 of 7) 3-pointers and senior Aja Williams going 3 for 3 from the Arc. The second period was much slower as the `Runners only added five points while the Redhawks added 13 to end 40-35.

Into the third, the `Runners and the Redhawks would go back and forth trading shots. Seattle U hit 535.7% of their shots from the field and converted on 2-of-2 free throws and 5-of-14 on the field to edge CSUB 12-18 on the period. Seattle U started responding back to the `Runners 11 point lead at the start of the fourth and outscored CSUB 21-17. However, Bakersfield defensive effort early in the game led the `Runners to the 7-point victory, a 10-10 overall record, and a 4-2 record in Western Athletic Conference play.

Williams, a native of Jackson, Miss., led all players with a whopping 23 points while adding 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Redshirt junior Jazmine Johnson was just short of a triple double scoring 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists which is a career high for her. To add to the stellar game for the `Runners, freshman Vanessa Austin scored a career high of 13 points while also adding 8 rebounds.
As a team, the `Runners outrebounded the Redhawks 44-35. Bakersfield outscored Seattle U 30-24 in the paint and 12-8 off turnovers on the way to the victory.

Coach McCall went on to discuss about the `Runners day, "This was a great team win, I know we had some great individual play. This is a great win for us, we are excited about it and now we just have to continue what we are doing and move forward,"

CSUB will head on the road next week, heading to the Windy City first to play their second WAC game for the season against Chicago State and then head to Kansas City to play UMKC on Saturday. Thursday's game will have tip-off scheduled for a 7 p.m. (CT) and Saturdays set for a 2 p.m. (CT).
