Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUB Late Comeback Comes Up Short In Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. – CSU Bakersfield's men's basketball team looked as if they are getting back to the same Roadrunners basketball Bakersfield is used to seeing. `Runners played a very defensive game against Seattle U and held them to under 60 points in a lost at Key Arena, 55-59.

"We had several times to cut the lead," said Rod Barnes Head Coach of CSUB. "I give our guys credit tonight, we are back to the way we have been playing and playing extremely hard. Our guys defended better and I am excited to see our team back fighting and clawing, that's what we built our team on. We'll get back into this second half of the season"

The first half was a back and forth battle between the two squads as the score tied twice and the lead changed four times. A 6-0 run late in the half gave the Redhawks the end lead into halftime, 25-29. Bakersfield defense kept the Seattle team to make only 33% (11-30) of its field goals. Senior Shon Briggs led the `Runners in the first half with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal.

With no fouls called on Seattle U in the first half, the Redhawks would get three fouls in the first one in a half minutes as the `Runners were creating more pressure. However, Seattle goes on a 6-3 run in the next five minutes and take a 10 point advantage. With just less than three minutes left redshirt junior Damiyne Durham would get a hot hand and get the `Runners to cut the Redhawks lead by three points at 53-55. Unfortunately, CSUB took SU back to the charity stripe three times in the final 30 seconds and the Redhawks would get the victory.

On the game, Briggs led the `Runners with 14 points including an impressive 6-of-8 from the free throw line while Durham came right behind with 13 points, four rebounds, and 2 assists. Despite losing, the `Runners outshot the Redhawks 38% to 34% from the field scoring 18 points in the paint and 10 from the bench.

CSUB (8-13, 1-5 WAC) will return to the Icardo Center to take on Chicago State. Saturday's game in the Icardo Center will have a 7 p.m. tipoff.
