CSUB Takes WAC Win At Home Over Chicago State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner women's basketball team got back into the win column with a convincing victory over Chicago State on Saturday. CSU Bakersfield put together a solid offensive performance while forcing 24 turnovers on the way to a 63-49 win in the Icardo Center.

"I'm definitely excited about today's win," said Greg McCall, Head Coach of the `Runners. "It was a great bounce back for us. As a team, we did some things very good. We knew that Chicago State is the type of team that we had to come out ready and focused. We started off good and got a great run on them."

McCall went on to describe some of the play that led his `Runners to a win on Saturday: "In the third quarter, they got on one of those highs, but then we started picking it right back up. We had a lot of assists and fastbreak points. Now we have to learn how to slow it down at times. That's going to come from continued game knowledge. I'm very pleased with the outcome."

An up and down first quarter ended with a run by CSUB, which took a 17-10 lead into the second period. A further-improved performance in the second led to a 37-22 halftime lead for the `Runners. Redshirt senior Aja Williams and junior Alexxus Gilbert led all players with nine points apiece. As a team, CSUB forced Chicago State to turn the ball over 14 times in the first half behind six `Runner steals.

In the third quarter, Chicago State responded with a bit of life. The Cougars hit 52% of their shots from the field and converted on 5-of-9 free throws to edge CSUB 18-15 on the period. The `Runners were unfazed by the less-than-stellar quarter and answered back by limiting Chicago State to just nine points in the fourth quarter. The defensive effort led the `Runners to the 14-point victory, a 9-10 overall record, and a 3-2 record in Western Athletic Conference play.

Williams, a native of Jackson, Miss., led all players with 15 points while adding three rebounds and four assists. Gilbert, a 5-foot-7 point guard, finished the contest with 14 points and three rebounds of her own. CSUB blocked five Chicago State shots including a pair of blocks from junior Malaysia McHenry, who added six points and six rebounds off the bench.

As a team, the `Runners outrebounded the Cougars 33-25. Bakersfield outscored Chicago State 36-20 in the paint and 35-9 off of turnovers on the way to the victory.

The `Runners will close out their home stand next weekend with a single WAC game. Seattle U will come to Bakersfield on Jan. 27 for a matchup against the `Runners with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Icardo Center.
