Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Finish The Night 2-2 In The WAC

BAKERSFIELD, Calif – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team caught the fire in the third and took its first lead in the fourth period but a last two second shot would give UMKC a road victory. Roadrunners end the night in a heartbreaker lost to the Kangaroos, who improved their WAC record 2-2.

"Disappointing," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB women's basketball team. "Very disappointing, very angry because we did not play like we were suppose to. We allow some things to happen in that game early on that shouldn't have happened."

`Runners jumped right out with a 3-pointer from junior Alexxus Gilbert to start the game off, but UMKC answered right back with a 3-pointer and stole the lead from there to end the first quarter 23-13. Into the second period and CSUB remained down but managed to cut the Kangaroos lead by six at the end of the second, 35-29. Leading the `Runners in the first half was Gilbert and redshirt senior Jazmyne Bartee with 6 points each.

Coming back from the half with their game faces on, Bakersfield was able to pick up their defense and outshoot Missouri-Kansas City 12-9. The Kangaroos shot 33% from the field while the `Runners shot 46% and was 2-2 at the line. CSUB closed the gap to just to three points at the end of the third quarter,41-44.

Two jumpers and a three pointer from the home team would give the `Runners its first lead of the game by two points with 7:53 left in the game. CSUB continued its lead and went on a 6-2 run before UMKC tied the game at 56 points each with 1:10 left. However, a jumper in the final two seconds would give the Kangaroos the victory.

Gilbert led the Roadrunners with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steal. Bartee had a well balance night with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals to end the night. As a team, Bakersfield shot 45.7% (21-of-46) from the field and had 24 points in the paint. CSUB and the Vaqueros tied the game three times before UMKC caught the last lead.

Coach McCall went on to comment on the rest of the game, "We won every quarter after the first but we didn't do enough and play smart enough at the end to get the stop that we needed. We made too many bad decisions down the stretch. We had this lead we blew our opportunity to get a 2-1 fast break, missed the layup and they came back to capitalize."

The `Runners will return back to the Icardo Center on Sat. Jan. 20 for an afternoon game with a tip off at 1 p.m. Fans who cannot make it can follow live stats and video by clicking the links on the women's schedule page.
