Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

CSUB Records Third Overtime Victory Of Season

Moraga, Calif. – A 109th-minute goal lifted CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team to its third recorded overtime victory, and second double overtime victory, over Saint Mary's University at Saint Mary's Stadium on Friday afternoon.

"Wow, what a finish! The heart that this team shows when adversity arrives is incredible. It would have been easy to drop our heads once St Mary's equalized, but these young women are made of the right stuff and their response was phenomenal," said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the Roadrunners. "We are getting better at controlling the tempo of games and our possession today was really good. Special mention must go to Jordan Bertram who made an unbelievable save towards the end of regulation. She kept her focus and re energized our team."

The Gaels, who hosted Bakersfield in the Saint Mary's tournament with a record of 2-3-0, gave up an early lead with a beautiful goal from forward Claire Nelson assisted perfectly by forward Kamari Hines at the 15'. This makes the second goal of the season for junior Nelson and first assist for red-shirt freshman Hines.

With an early goal the 'Runners created some added pressure for the Gaels by keeping procession and controlling the first half of the match despite taking only a total of two shots.

Looking a little winded during the second half from the `Runners, the Gaels found some extra energy and took control of the second half. At the 81' Senior Hannah Diaz and sophomore Anna Parker found sophomore mid-fielder Kailanna Kaeo to put away her first goal of the season to score the equalizer.

Stunned by the goal the `Runners immediately picked up their pace to try and break the tie. The CSUB back line kept the Gaels out of the box to pushed forward. Senior Michele Day came just short of a nearly perfect goal to save the `Runners from going overtime at the 88' but unfortunately it was saved by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Sarah Sawatsky.

End of 90 minutes and they went into their first overtime maintaining equal control of the ball with no shots being made from either side forcing the `Runners and Gaels to go to double overtime.

Defender sophomore Sophie Freeman comes in for the `Runners trying to close out the game but comes up short when saved by the Gaels. Shortly after the Gael's mid-fielder Heather Seybert takes a shot but comes out too wide. Frustrated with the heat and long match CSUB pushed forward to take possession immediately. With only 1:12 left in the match Aryana Harvey comes close to the net on the right side to cross to Aminah Settles giving her the opportunity to tap the ball in to give CSUB a third overtime victory.

Settles also recorded her second goal of the season while Hines recorded her first assist of the season. After giving up the late goal in the first 90', CSUB's and sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Bertram recorded five saves to help the `Runners earn their third overtime win.

Today's overtime victory officially recorded in CSUB's history to win not one, not two but three matches that have gone to overtime that ended in a victory.

CSUB (4-3-0) will continue the tournament on Sunday to close the weekend with a match against Grambling State. The `Runners and Tigers are set for a 11 a.m. start in Moraga, Calif.
