Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

`Runners Go 2-0 At Saint Mary's Tourney With Win On Sunday

MORAGA, Calif. – Another 2-1 victory at the Saint Mary's Tournament on Sunday helped CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team open the 2017 with its best eight-game start (5-3) and make this group of Roadrunners the program's fastest to five wins since the switch to NCAA Division I. Goals from Alexa Orrante and Kamari Hines and another standout performance by the CSUB defense helped the `Runners top Grambling State.

"Coming off the emotional win on Friday, this was a big test for our team and I thought they passed it with flying colors," said Gary Curneen, CSUB's Head Coach. "We came ready to fight and I thought we dictated the game both in and out of possession. Grambling State was a difficult team to break down, but we stayed patient and took our chances when they arrived."

Curneen went on to talk about his team's hot start and CSUB's focus moving forward: "The records are great, but we won't pay too much attention to them at the minute. We set our goals in August and they are all about the end of the season, not the start of it. That said, we have worked very very hard to get to these wins and have earned the confidence that comes with them. Now it is important that we use that momentum to keep focused on growing and getting better."

CSUB dominated the first half, outshooting Grambling State 11-2 in the period. The `Runners enjoyed the majority of possession and worked their way into the Tigers' final third relentlessly. In the 26th minute, the `Runners earned a penalty kick and Orrante, a redshirt junior, put the ball past the keeper to give CSUB a 1-0 advantage.

After halftime, the `Runners continued to control possession, eventually outshooting the Tigers 21-5 on the match . In the 59th minute, CSUB earned a corner kick and did not waste the opportunity. Redshirt sophomore Aryana Harvey curled the corner into the box and found Hines, a redshirt freshman. The Washington transfer, who came into the match tied for the Western Athletic Conference lead in goals, netted her fifth of the season to put CSUB ahead 2-1.

The Tigers were able to connect for a goal of their own at 83:04 when Sage Nelson converted a free kick golaso, but the damage was already done and the `Runners held on for their second 2-1 victory of the weekend. The CSUB back line limited the Grambling State defense all day and helped sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Bertram only need to make one save. Senior defender Morgan Cole also played a big role in the win as the only other `Runner besides Bertram to play all 90 minutes on Sunday.

CSUB (5-3) will return to Bakersfield for a pair of home matches this week. On Friday, Sept. 15, the `Runners will host UNLV before closing the weekend against Sacramento State on Sunday, Sept. 17. Fans can buy tickets at the gate as well as ahead of time here.
