Fresno State Halts CSUB's Win Streak

FRESNO, Calif. – Coming into Sunday night's road match, the Roadrunner women's soccer team had snagged back-to-back overtime victories. CSU Bakersfield was unable to muster that late-match magic in a loss at Fresno State after the Bulldogs came out strong and held off the `Runners for a 3-0 victory in Fresno.

"No complaints with the result, but I cannot fault our work ethic and attitude." said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We certainly came here to compete and had the confidence to take the ball, but we just lacked the cutting edge in the final third that was there on Thursday night. We are still a work in progress and tonight was about growth. The challenge now is to learn from it, improve on the practice field, and bounce back on Friday night."

The two teams matched up well in the opening 45 minutes with the Bulldogs narrowly edging the `Runners in shots, 6-5. An 18th-minute goal from Fresno State's Julia Glaser put the home team ahead 1-0 early on and the Bulldogs would take the one-goal advantage into halftime.

In the second half, the Bulldogs outshot the `Runners 6-2 and outscored CSUB 2-0. Fresno State held on for the shutout victory, defeating the visiting `Runners 3-0 at the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Bertram stopped two shots on goal for CSUB in the match. Junior transfer Claire Nelson led the `Runner offensive attack with two shots on Sunday evening. After missing the first four games due to injury, senior Maja Green played all 90 minutes on the CSUB backline.

The `Runners (3-3-0) will hit the road again next week, traveling north to Moraga, Calif. for the Saint Mary's Tournament. CSUB will meet host SMC on Friday, Sept. 8, before closing the weekend in a neutral-site match against Grambling State on Sunday, Sept. 10.
