`Runners Top 5 Looking To Make Big Strides

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's cross-country team will travel down to Santa Clarita this weekend as the Roadrunners race at the Mustang Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 30.

This weekend's cross-country race is hopeful to be led by top runners of the season, senior Angel Valdez and sophomore Paradise Pelzer. "Angel and Paradise having been looking great in training over the past few weeks," said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country at CSUB, "Angel has been racing with confidence and is pulling Paradise right along with her in training."

Last meet, Valdez topped CSUB's list for most consecutive races leading Bakersfield (12) and broke her own record since her last 5k which also put her at third overall top 10 times for CSUB. Pelzer has been running strong for the `Runners in the No. 2 position since her first year as a `Runner and continues to improve her time.

Mansur-Wentworth went on to mention the other student-athletes as being the top five runners on the 2017 team, "Alejandra Frausto has run strong in the number three position for the team and Alyssa Diaz has been getting closer to become top three CSUB runners. Redshirt freshman Sonia Holguin has been consistently running in the top five so far, this season."

The `Runners are very hopeful to continue improving for 2017 season with her top five runners. Coach Mansur-Wentworth affirms, "Keys for success are being aggressive and confident in the race just as they are in training. I am optimistic about the race and the team."

Saturday's meet is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. in Santa Clarita, Calif. Results will be made available later in the day Saturday.
