Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

CSUB Falls At Home Against UCR

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women soccer hosted UC Riverside to try and secure a win before starting their WAC matches but the Highlanders were determined to end their five-game losing streak and highlighted the night with three goals to take the victory. The Roadrunners trailed 1-3 Sunday evening.

A cross from the right side to Ashley Webb gave UCR an early lead at the third minute. The `Runners came shy of a goal when redshirt junior Aminah Settles took a cross from the left side to just come a little wide and finger tipped by Riverside goalie. However, in less than a minute UCR scored another goal in the right back corner at the 23', then secured their third goal with eight minutes left in the first. The `Runners were outscored by half 5-10.

The second half was a different soccer match for the `Runners as they took more control and closed the gap in shots 5-8. Three shots were taken by CSUB before junior Sabrina Delgado took a free kick at the 78' to give midfielder Sophie Freeman the perfect header to put the `Runners on the board. Bakersfield backline kept the Highlanders from scoring another goal in the second half but it wasn't enough for CSUB to add another goal for the night.

"We were a little more clinical in our procession, in terms we moved a little bit quicker," said CSUB's women's soccer head coach, Gary Curneen describing the second half of the game. "We created more chances but we have to take them and score them. Our back four were excellent tonight but we just didn't take our chances upfront when we needed to."

Sophomore Sophie Freeman scored her first goal of the season for the `Runners while midfielder Delgado recorded her second assist of the season and goalkeeper Jordan Bertram recorded eight saves for the night.

The `Runners will begin their first pair of league matches for the upcoming weekend starting with New Mexico State and UTRGV on the road. Friday, Oct. 6 match will be played at Las Cruces, NM at 3 p.m. (MT) and Sunday, Oct. 8 they will head to Texas for an 11 a.m. (CT) match up against UTRGV. Live stats and live stream will be available via WAC Digital Network.
