`Runners Lose On The Road At Pacific

Stockton, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield went to Stockton, Calif. with a couple goals in mind on Friday night.  The `Runners want to finish non-conference play with a winning record and they also wanted to put a stop to their two game losing streak. But the Pacific Tigers wanted to put an end to their 4 game winless streak and the Tigers got off to a roaring start.

Sophomore Katelyn Chandler scored her first goal of the year in the 10th minute for Pacific to give them an early 1-0 lead and that is how the first half would end.  Pacific outshot CSUB 10-4 in the first half.  Early in the second half, Senior Taylor Ayers scored her third goal of the season on a shot that just went in off the crossbar to make it a 2-0 Tigers lead.

CSUB's best opportunity to score came about halfway into the second half when Sophie Freeman sent a low cross through the six yard box, but no `Runner could get there to knock it home and the game would finish 2-0 and the `Runners fall to 5-6 on the year.

"We created enough chances to win the game tonight but our start cost us dearly," said `Runners Head Coach Gary Curneen.  "We cannot afford to tiptoe our way into these games and expect to get a result. For 65 minutes we were excellent but if you don't bring a 90 minute mentality at this level you'll walk away empty handed. If we can take care of that and embrace what we are, this will have been a great learning curve."

Goalkeeper Henrikka Makela recorded the shutout by making 4 saves to help improve the Tigers to 3-6-2 on the year. Jordan Bertram, a sophomore goalkeeper for the `Runners, made 4 saves in the loss. Pacific went on to outshoot the `Runners 20-11 for the game.

The `Runners return home Sunday evening, Sept. 24 with a match against UC Riverside at 6 p.m. at Main Soccer Field.
