CSUB Falls To UNLV In A Competitive Battle

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team hosted UNLV on Friday evening to open the weekend festivities. Despite coming close to an overtime game, tied at 1-1 before the 81st, the Roadrunners fell to Rebels by a score of 2-1.

"I was proud to be a part of the program tonight, proud to representing a team like that there, who can perform on a big stage like this," said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the `Runners. "Before the game, we spoke about looking them in the eye and going at them, I think we definitely did that. They threw a couple of punches at us and we threw a couple of punches right back at them."

The `Runners battled it out in the first half and surpassed the Rebels in shots 8-7. Senior Michele Day started the momentum in the first minute with the first of CSUB's close chances but the shot was too high. Goalkeeper Jordan Bertram recorded four saves in the first 45 minutes.

The second half went underway as the Rebels took an early lead in the 51st by Sophie Cortes. At 67:11 UNLV took a `Runner down in the box to give CSUB a penalty kick. Redshirt junior Alexa Orrante netted the penalty kick, giving the `Runners the equalizer. Despite outshooting the Rebels in the second half, Sophie Cortes scored her second goal of the night for UNLV late in the 81st and the`Runners could not get past goalkeeper Jordan Sallee.

Coach Curneen went on to comment about the match, "It was such an open game. It could of went either way but fair play to them for getting the results." The `Runners kept a good pace the entire 90 minutes despite playing against a team that now has a record of 7-1-0 and has one of the best players in the nation. CSUB outshot UNLV 19-16 and Bertram had a season high of seven saves. Bakersfield's goal of the night, shot by Orrante, gave her a season high of four goals, which makes her second on the team.

The `Runners (5-4-0) will be back at the Main Soccer Field to host Sacramento State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close the weekend.  The game can be watched live via WAC Digital Network at WACSPORTS.com.
