Nguyen Nets First Collegiate Goal, OT Winner For CSUB

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (2-1) kicked off their Labor Day weekend with an overtime victory in Sacramento against the Sacramento State Hornets (0-2).  Freshman Henry Nguyen scored his first collegiate goal and it was a memorable one.  Memorable indeed.  Nguyen scored near the end of the first overtime (98th minute) to give CSUB the "W" and help the `Runners improve to 2-1 on the year.  Freshman Marius Olsson-Aksepoll had just subbed into the game less than a minute before and he got the game winning assist.

The `Runners and the Hornets played a scoreless first half in which neither team had a great scoring chance.  The Hornets did get three shots off in the half, but none really tested goalkeeper Detre Bell of the `Runners.  CSUB was offsides three times in the first half to the Hornets' one.  Nguyen of the `Runners picked up the only yellow card of the half for either team.

In the second half, it was more of the same, not many quality scoring chances for either team.  In the 71st minute, Bell came up with the best save of the game for either team to keep the game scoreless.  At the end of regulation the Hornets outshot CSUB 8-4.

Shots finished in  favor of the Hornets for the game 9-5, with Nguyen's the final and game-winning shot.

Head Coach Richie Grant and CSUB will play on the road again this Sunday at UC Davis with kickoff at 4 p.m.
