Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Take A Tough Loss Against Future Big West Opponents, UCR

BAKERSFIELD, CA – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team played in their 11th match up with UC Riverside, since going Division I in the 2007-08 season, on a Wednesday matinee game and ended in a loss,68-65. After last week's big news of the Roadrunners moving to the Big West, the game sure felt as if the two teams were already playing in a conference game.

"We were battling, we made some crucial mistakes, defensively, at the end," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB women's basketball team. "That kind of hurt us as we were right on the doorstep of taking the lead or tying the game. We came out a little softer, but we started playing our style of basketball. We've got some things we need to work on, but we also need to keep up the same defensive effort."

The `Runners came out hot, firing three 3-pointers to take their largest lead of the day before the first media timeout was called, 11-5. However, UCR found their own fire and was able to tie the game twice in the first period (11 and 13) before taking the one point lead at 18-17. Redshirt Jazmine Johnson led CSUB with six points, three rebounds, and one assists.

In the second period Bakersfield came back with avenges, going on a 10-3 run until the highlanders would hold off the `Runners to tie it up at 27 and then add eight more points to take the lead into the half, 35-30. Through the first half CSUB scored 40% of its field goals and 56% of those shots made came from 3-pointers.

UCR kept their lead in the third period and outscored CSUB 18-17 and extended their lead by 6, 53-47. The `Runners added 18 points and defensively held the Highlanders to nine field goals in the fourth quarter but UCR's early lead gave them the victory at the final buzzer,68-65.

Johnson led the Roadrunners with 15 points and 7 rebounds while two `Runners, Aja Williams and Alexxus Gilbert, scored 12 points. Williams also had six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block. As a team Bakersfield made 39% of their field goals and ended the day with 23 points coming from their bench.

The `Runners will head back on the road for one more game before returning home for a double header with the men. Saturday, Dec 9. CSUB will face off against South Dakota with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT). `Runner fans can watch the game live or follow live stats by finding the link on the women's basketball schedule page.
