Box Score VERMILLION, SD – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team fell behind 12-0 to open the game at South Dakota and the `Runners were never able to recover and fell to the Coyotes 66-50.
With 4:24 remaining in the first quarter, the `Runners were finally able to get on the board with a jumper from senior
Aja Williams, but the Coyotes led 12-2. The `Runners trailed 18-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The Coyotes continued their run in the second quarter and took a 32-14 lead into halftime. South Dakota was led by Madison McKeever's seven points. The `Runners had three players tied with three points each at the half. The Coyotes were 6-12 (50%) from three point range in the first half and 10-22 from the field overall. CSUB shot 5-22 from the field (23%) and 3-12 from three point range. The Coyotes had 10 steals and forced 14 CSUB turnovers overall at the break.
The `Runners would score 16 points in the third quarter, but South Dakota would put 22 on the board and the Coyotes extended their lead to 24 and led 54-30 at the end of the third quarter.
CSUB would win the fourth quarter 20-12 and the `Runners offense would find some rhythm in the second half, but a tough first half for CSUB offensively, sealed the win for South Dakota. The `Runners were led by Williams 16 points and seven rebounds. McKeever finished with a game high 17 points.
The Coyotes shot 47% from the field for the game and came back to earth from three point range in the second half. South Dakota shot 2-13 from three in the second half after going 6-12 in the first half. The `Runners shot 28% from the field and 24% from three point range. Both teams had 17 turnovers each.
South Dakota improves to 6-4 on the season and the `Runners fall to 3-6.
The `Runners will look to get back on track on Saturday, Dec. 16 against Whittier College at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
