Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Johnson Posts A Career High As CSUB Comes Short To UCI

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team played their annual New Year's Eve game at home and fell to UC Irvine 72-59. The Roadrunners struggled through the second quarter and then gained a strong momentum in the second half but were not able to catch up to the Anteaters at the final buzzer.

"Second quarter was ugly, we were way out of character" said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB women's basketball team. "Going into halftime we talked about what we can do better. As you could tell, the results in the third and fourth quarter we came out and played our style of basketball."

`Runners and Anteaters played a fairly even first quarter as both teams took turns taking shots with UC Irvine taking the lead at 18-15. In the second quarter UCI built a momentum that could not be stopped by Bakersfield until the final two minutes of the game and CSUB will get their first point by redshirt junior Jazmine Johnson. Anteaters took a major lead into half time, 43-18. Johnson led the `Runners at the half with 12 points and 2 rebounds.

A good pep talk during halftime was what the `Runners needed. CSUB started out at the line and then went on 4-0 run before both sides went on a quiet two minutes. Sophomores Daije Harris and Dalis Jones 3-pointers helped the `Runners gain 21 points in the third quarter and make 60% of their field goals.

60-39 would start the final 10 minutes as Bakersfield slowly started closing in on Irvine. Back at the line for the `Runners to get their first two points and continued firing shots as they went on a 5-0 run. CSUB cut the deficit to nine points, the closest since the first quarter with 1:53 left in the game. Unfortunately, the Anteaters had gained a high advantage during the second quarter that the `Runners were not able to catch UCI.

Despite today's loss Johnson had a career high of 25 points while freshman Vanessa Austin finished the game with 13 points and 4 rebounds. As a team, Bakersfield made 34.5% of its shots making 28 in the paint and 11 points coming from the bench.

McCall went on to comment about the rest of the game, "It's one of those things where you were running out of time when you finally get into the groove and things started going your way. I was disappointed in the loss but happy in the way they played in the second half. They showed the fan and us, that there is no quitting this team."

The `Runners will return to the Icardo Center Saturday, Jan 6. and will begin conference play. CSUB will face off against Utah Valley with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
