Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CSUB Lost In A Tough Rematch Battle Against Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. –CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team played in a tough rematch against the Cal Poly Mustangs. Last year, the Mustangs traveled to Bakersfield and loss in a close battle but this year Cal Poly got their revenge and defeated the Roadrunners 59-57.

"It was a tough one tonight, said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB women's basketball team. "We didn't execute defensively early on in the game. We still held them well below their average, but there were a few crucial parts that we didn't execute."

The `Runners and the Mustangs played a pretty quiet first quarter as the first shot was not taken until three minutes into the game by CSUB, who kept its lead until the Mustang went on a 9-1 run to give Cal Poly the lead at the end of the first quarter 15-10. However, CSUB got back into the game in the second half and outscored the Mustangs 19-14 to tie up the game at 29 points each into the half. Freshman Vanessa Austin led the `Runners at the half by scoring eight points in six minutes.

CSUB came out hot in the third quarter and gained a four point lead before Cal Poly got its first point from a free throw and then continued a 7-0 run. A media timeout gave the `Runners just enough momentum to pick up the pace to tie up the game at 37 with four minutes left in the third. The Mustangs offensive rebounds would help Cal Poly take the lead at the end of the quarter, 43-39.

Two 3-pointers in the final eight minutes gave Cal Poly the biggest lead of the night. However, CSUB was not ready to call the game just yet and went on a 9-0 run to make it a one point game with one minute left. A media time out called with 22 seconds left and the score remained the same until CSUB draws a foul called against them that would take the Mustangs to the line to add one more point for Cal Poly to secure the victory at the final buzzer.

Junior Alexxus Gilbert led the Roadrunners with 12 points and 3 rebounds while senior Aja Williams scored 11 points and had 5 rebounds for the night. Redshirt Jazmyne Bartee posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Despite losing as a team, Bakersfield shot 35.2% (19-of-54) of its shots compared to Cal Poly only making 29.7%. 24 of the `Runners shots were from the paint and 16 came from their bench.

McCall went on the discuss about the rest of the game, "It was a tough atmosphere to play in. Offensively, we missed a couple of crucial plays at the end. We played hard and had an opportunity to win, but just fumbled it out of bounds at the end. The team will bounce back and be ready for Sunday to play at home against UC Irvine."

Bakersfield will return home to wrap up the 2017 year in an annual New Year's Eve game at the Icardo Center. The `Runners will play against UC Irvine with a tipoff schedule for 1 p.m.
