EDINBURG, Texas – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team wrapped up their weekend road trip with a match against Western Athletic Conference rival UTRGV.
The `Runners put an end to a four game losing streak at New Mexico State on Friday with a 2-2 draw to open WAC play and went to Edinburg, Texas looking to stay undefeated in league play. CSUB and UTRGV played a scoreless first half with the best chance for the `Runners to score coming in the 20
th minute. The `Runners were awarded a free kick from 23 yards out, but junior
Haley Vicente's effort went just over the bar.
CSUB outshot UTRGV 6-5 in the first half and thirteen fouls were committed, seven of them by UTRGV.
In the 67
th minute, Andreya Barrera scored her sixth goal of the season on an assist from Tuva Nilsen to give UTRGV the 1-0 lead. In the 85
th minute, Jada Maclean scored her third goal of the season for UTRGV and it was assisted by Hanna Spets to give UTRGV the 2-0 lead. And that is where they would finish. Erica Gonzalez made four saves to earn the shutout for UTRGV.
"Obviously, we are disappointed with the result today," said
Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the `Runners. "I thought we played well, but they took their chances and credit to them for that. It's a tough weekend for us, but we talk about and work on culture a lot here for a reason. The wins didn't define us when things were going well and a loss or two won't do it either. We have a great group of people in this program who want to be successful and that hasn't changed. I'm looking forward to seeing our response."
The `Runners fall to 5-8-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in the WAC, while UTRGV improves to 7-5-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the WAC.
CSUB will be back in action on Friday night, Oct. 13, when they host WAC foe UMKC with a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Main Soccer Field.
