CSUB Puts Up Good Battle, Falls To UMKC

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team hosted UMKC on Friday evening to open the weekend festivities. Despite putting up an intense battle with WAC opponents UMKC, scoreless after the first half, the Roadrunners fell to the Kangaroos by a score of 2-0.

"I thought we were outstanding tonight, we prepared a little bit differently, tactically," said Head Coach of women's soccer Gary Curneen. "I'm really proud of them and we created chances right off the back."

The `Runners battled it out in the first half and surpassed the Roos in shots on goals 3-2 despite only taking 6 shots in total compared to UMKC's 11 shots. Sophomore Sophie Freeman started the momentum in the first minute with the first of CSUB's close chances but the shot was wide. Goalkeeper Jordan Bertram recorded two saves in the first 45 minutes.

Coach Curneen went on to comment on the rest of the match after the first half, "I was a little bit disappointed we weren't a goal up at the half. I thought we had a great opportunity but can't fault the effort, momentum is a big thing in soccer. We are having to fight and get back at the minute but if we keep performing like we did tonight we should do well. There's a few more games in the season, so don't write us off yet."

In the second half redshirt junior Aminah Settles opens up the momentum early by taking two shots back to back but was saved by goal keeper Anna Liilig. The defense was intense by the `Runners but the Roos, Reighan Childers, would shoot a goal out from the right corner to give them the lead at the 70'.  Just about four minutes later Childers would find the goal again at 20 yards out and bury the ball pass Bertram. CSUB held on to UMKC and gave them a good fight but could not find the goal before the 90th minute.

The `Runners (5-9-1, 0-2-1WAC) will be back at the Main Soccer Field to host Chicago State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close the weekend.  The game can be watched live via WAC Digital Network at WACSPORTS.com.
