Runners Victorious In 4 At Fullerton

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. – After an emotional five set victory over Western Athletic Conference rival Utah Valley on Saturday, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team traveled a couple hours south down the road to play their last non-conference match of the year against Cal State Fullerton. CSUB improved to 11-8 on the season with a four set (25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 25-19) victory over the Titans, who fall to 4-13 on the year.

The `Runners defeated the Titans 25-21 in the first set. Junior Mattison DeGarmo had the set winning kill for CSUB. Senior Aleksandra Djordjevic and DeGarmo tied for the team lead in kills in the first set with 4 each. Senior Emily Lopes, from Bakersfield, had 11 digs to lead the `Runners.

The `Runners came out hot to start the second set and built a 17-10 lead over CSF. But the Titans battled back and eventually won the set 26-24 to tie the match at one. After two sets, Djordjevic, DeGarmo and Senior Haylee Roberts led the team in kills with six each. Lopes had 16 digs to lead CSUB and Djordjevic had seven digs to go along with her six kills. Madeline Schneider had 13 kills and Cady Francis had nine digs to lead the Titans at the break.

CSUB built up another big lead in the third set, this time they led 18-10 at one point, but this time they finished the job with a 25-18 victory. After three, DeGarmo lead the `Runners with 10 kills and Lopes had 20 digs through three. Djordjevic had the set winning kill and had nine kills overall and 14 digs through three sets.

The `Runners came out flying early in each and every game and the fourth set was no different. CSUB doubled up the Titans 16-8 to open up the fourth and the `Runners eventually put the set and the match away with a 25-19 four set victory.

Djordjevic continues to show her versatility by leading the `Runners in kills with 13 for the game and second in digs with 18. CSUB had three others finish with double digit kills, DeGarmo had 12, Junior Briannah Mariner had 11 and Roberts finished with 10. The `Runners also had four players with double digit digs, including Lopes who led CSUB with 25. Senior Fabiana Andrade and Sophomore Sidney Wicks led the team in assists with 27 and 21, respectively.

The `Runners will get back into conference play at home in the Icardo Center this Friday, Oct. 6 with first serve schedule for 4:30 p.m.
