Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- With an injured player near the top of the penalty area, the UC Davis Aggies took advantage of the numbers as Kyle Higgins hit a 14-foot game winner in the 70th minute to lift UC Davis to a 3-2 win over CSUB Thursday night at The Main Soccer Field.
“We thought our lad was fouled,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “He was carried off the field and that's a tough one because we felt the goal came from that.”
That goal was the lone tally of the second half after a furious first-half that saw four goals between the two teams. The Aggies struck first on a Noah Wilson cross that found the head of Matt Baringer in the fourth minute. CSUB answered that goal in the 22nd minute when Julian Zamora's cross from the right side of the box found Hugo Vinales for the score.
UC Davis managed to take the lead back 10 minutes later when Wilson took advantage of a direct kick and scored from 23 yards out with a shot in the top left corner. CSUB would once again answer with Vinales who dribbled through a pair of defenders for his second goal of the night and the season.
The Roadrunners were outshot 12-6 in the match, CSUB goalkeeper Nicolas Clever made six saves including a pair in the second half to keep the match even prior to the Davis game winner in the 70th minute. CSUB pushed for the equalizer and had a pair of good looks late in the match just to be turned away by the Aggie defense.
The loss drops the 'Runners to 1-5 this season with all five losses coming by a single goal.
“We played well at New Mexico but I think we played some of our best attacking football tonight,” Grant said. “They had a good first and second goal and I think we showed the character of this team coming back from that.”
CSUB will complete the weekend as they travel to Loyola Marymount on Sunday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 P.M. in Los Angeles.
