BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—No. 11 San José State defeated No. 23 CSU Bakersfield 14-7 in MPSF water polo action Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 6-4 in the third, the Roadrunners cut the Spartans (17-13, 1-5 MPSF) lead to one when Niki De Leon scored with 5:30 to play. San José State scored the next five goals over the next 7+ minutes before Cassandra Ream broke the string with 4:34 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans' Rae Lekness moved into second on the MPSF career goals chart as she scored four times. Lekness has charted 288 goals, trailing only USC's Monica Vavic who scored 291 during her career (2012-15).
San José State's Carlo Toha Vilanova and Donia Momen both scored four goals. The Roadrunners' top goal scorer was Jada Helberg who had two. CSUB goalie Brittany Tyra made 10 saves. Both teams took 28 shots. The Roadrunners committed 15 turnovers while the Spartans turned the ball over 13 times.
“We made some critical defensive mistakes and spotted them a couple of goals,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We had some good looks but we didn't convert them. Give San José State credit, they are ranked No. 11. We match up better than the score indicates.”
The Roadrunners conclude the regular season next Saturday at No. 8 California. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
