'Runners Fall To UCSB To Close Tournament

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior outfielder Sydney Raeber went 3-for-4 at the plate for CSU Bakersfield's softball team, but another big fourth inning for UC Santa Barbara pushed the Gauchos to an 8-4 victory over the Roadrunners.

In the top of the fourth inning, the 'Runners took a 1-0 lead for the third straight game. After Raeber and Selena Gonzalez singled to open the inning, Briana Pontecorvo's sacrifice bunt set up a scoring opportunity. Starting pitcher Amber Mills helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly to put CSUB ahead by a run.

Much akin to Saturday night's game against UCSB, the Gauchos exploded for multiple runs in the fourth inning. The day prior, UCSB put up six runs in the fourth before posting a seven-spot on Sunday. Mills was pulled after giving up five runs and junior Lyndsay Klimenko gave up two more before stopping the bleeding.

The 'Runners showed fight, answering back in the next half inning by scoring three runs. After being hit by a pitch, Maddi Clark eventually made it to third and scored on Julea Cavazos' sac fly. The UCSB catcher made a fielding error on the play, allowing shortstop Alex Simmons to score as well, cutting the UCSB lead down to just four runs. Raeber singled with two outs and Gonzalez followed that with a walk. Pontecorvo singled through the right side to plate Raeber and bring the score to 7-4.

UC Santa Barbara tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth on Samantha Stark's sac fly. Trailing 8-4, the 'Runners came up to bat with just three outs remaining. Raeber got a one-out single, her third hit of the game and ninth of the weekend, but CSUB was unable to start a rally.

CSU Bakersfield fell to 4-11 with the loss while UCSB improved to 11-8. Mill (2-3) took the loss after giving up five earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Klimenko relived for 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, none of which were earned.

Raeber was 3-for-4 on Sunday and went 9-for-18 on the tournament with two doubles, three runs, and three RBI. Cavazos, Pontecorvo, and Mills had the three RBI for CSUB on Sunday. CSUB was a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases at the Stacey Winseberg Tournament while the team went 1-4 against tough competition.

Next weekend, the Roadrunners will head north for the Fresno State Classic. CSUB will play five games over three days in its fourth tournament of the season. The 'Runners will face tough opponents again in Weber State and San Diego State as well as two ranked opponents in No. 8 Washington and No. 22 Fresno State.
