GLENDALE, Calif.--No. 24 CSU Bakersfield extended its winning streak to six with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at Citrus College.
The Roadrunners defeated No. 25 CSUN 10-8 in Saturday's first match. The Matadors closed the CSUB lead to 9-8 when Miranda Coleman scored with 1:09 to play. Katie Benson put the game away with a 6-on-5 goal on the ensuing Roadrunner possession.
Ashley Paz led CSUB with three goals. Niki De Leon and Nicola Barrett both scored twice. Kristen Jensen scored a goal, posted three assists, and drew three exclusions. Courtney Wahlstrom charted 14 saves.
“We came out with great energy and put some early shots away to open up a 3-0 lead,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We gave up too many goals in the fourth quarter but we did a nice job of getting the stops when we needed to.”
The Roadrunners defeated Azusa Pacific 10-7 in the nightcap. Paz scored a game high four goals for the 'Runners. Jensen had two goals drew two exclusions. Barrett scored twice and made two steals. De Leon posted four assists. Brittany Tyra made 11 saves in net.
“I think we're really starting to find our identity on both the offensive and defensive ends,” Gall said. “We're starting to build chemistry and I think we are in a good spot headed into conference next weekend.”
The Roadrunners open MPSF play next Saturday at Arizona State. The start time is set for 11 a.m. (MST) against the Sun Devils. CSUB will also face Wagner next Saturday at ASU beginning at 5:30 p.m. (MST).
