McCall Signs 2 To National Letter Of Intent

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield head women's basketball coach Greg McCall has announced the signing of two prep players to continue their playing careers with the Roadrunners.

"We are very grateful to sign two players that will be great additions to our program for the 2017-18 season," McCall said. "Jasmin Dixon and Vanessa Austin are two recruits that will add new components, depth, and versatility to our program."

Dixon travels down Old River Road from Bakersfield's Independence High School to join the 'Runner program. A 5-7 guard, Dixon was named second team Bakersfield Californian BVarsity All-Area, All-League, and the team's Best Offensive Player as a junior. Dixon has helped lead Independence to CIF Central Section Championships in 2015 and 2016 as well as the 2015 South Yosemite League title. Dixon excels in the classroom as she carries a 3.8 grade point average and has earned an IHS Academic Excellence Award.

"Jasmin is one of the top local basketball players here in the Central Valley," McCall said. "Her family is well known in the basketball community here in Bakersfield, and we are excited that a local product as talented as she is, will be wearing the Blue and Gold. Jasmin is a very hard nose and aggressive defender, and her intense style of play will contribute in a major way to our uptempo defensive schemes. Offensively she is a great penetrator, and outside shooter. Above all, Jasmin is an excellent student in the class room, and is a great person on and off of the court."

Vanessa Austin is a 6-1 post player from Salt Lake City, Utah. She will graduate in the Spring of 2017 from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City. Austin was named first team All-State as a junior, third team All-State as a sophomore, and honorable mention All-State as a freshman. She was named second team American Family Insurance All-USA Utah girls basketball team in 2016. Austin has earned Scholar Athlete honors three times as her team won a region title in 2014. Austin has placed twice at the state track and field meet in the shot put and discus.

"Vanessa also comes from a basketball background in which her dad, Ike Austin, played in the NBA with several teams, most notable with the Miami Heat, LA Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies," McCall said. "Vanessa is a very aggressive and strong post, that will be an immediate impact player. She has great hands and good footwork around the basket, in addition to her being a phenomenal rebounder. She is an excellent student in the class and an even better person off of the floor."

The Roadrunners open the 2016-17 season on Sunday when CSUB hosts Hawai'i at 1 p.m. Fans wishing to purchase tickets can call (661) 654-BLUE. For additional ticketing options, visit GoRunners.com/tix.
