Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team wrapped up non-conference play by defeating UC Irvine 65-39 Sunday afternoon.
CSU Bakersfield jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter and led 34-17 at halftime. CSUB limited the Anteaters to 26.7% shooting for the (16-of-60) and only permitted one UCI three-pointer (in 14 attempts). CSU Bakersfield scored 23 points off of 19 UC Irvine turnovers and made eight steals. The Roadrunners shot 40.8% (23-of-57).
'Runner forward Dajy Vines led all scorers with 14 points. The sixth-year senior was 4-of-6 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds and had two assists. Roadrunner point guard Alyssa Shannon scored 10 points, dished out five assists, grabbed three rebounds, and made two steals. Brittany Sims came off the bench to shoot 4-of-5 from the field and score 10 points. She added four rebounds. UC Irvine (3-11) had one player score in double figures in Raelyn Cheung-Sutton who had 10.
“This was a great win for us,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “It was a great way to start the new year off and go into conference with a huge win for us. I was proud of our defensive effort today; we were able to get some easy buckets off our transition defense. We still need to work on our rebounding, but I thought I saw some progress and continue to work on those things.
The 39 points allowed by CSUB are the second fewest points given up by the Roadrunners in a game since moving to the Division I level. CSUB defeated Utah Valley 78-36 on Dec. 9, 2009 to establish the school Division I record. The 'Runner defense allowed the fewest points in a game to a Division I opponent since Feb. 20, 2010 when the Roadrunners defeated Seattle U 64-44.
