SAN JOSE, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield dropped a pair of matches to nationally ranked opponents on the final day of the Lou Strong Memorial on Sunday.
Playing the first game of the day at 8 a.m., No. 9 UC Davis defeated the Roadrunners 11-5. Kristen Jensen scored a goal and made three steals for the top CSUB offensive performance. Niki De Leon drew three exclusions. Brittany Tyra got the start in goal and made 11 saves.
“We did a lot of good things on offense, but we weren't able to put ball in the goal,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We created a lot of advantages and earned a lot of exclusions. We played with good intensity throughout most of the game”
No. 4 California defeated CSU Bakersfield 7-3 in the final CSUB match of the tournament. Although, the 'Runners lost, it was the fewest goals that the CSUB defense has given up to the Bears in seven all-time meetings.
The defensive performance tied the school mark for fewest goals allowed to an MPSF opponent in 46 all-time meetings. The 'Runners gave up seven to Stanford (7-1 loss) during the 2010 season and seven to San Jose State (7-6 loss) during the 2002 campaign.
Courtney Wahlstrom made 12 saves for the Roadrunners in goal. Ashley Paz scored a goal and drew three exclusions.
“We accomplished our goal of getting better in each game,” Gall said. “Cal has a lot of offensive weapons and to keep them to seven goals is a big deal. We again had some offensive opportunities that we need to start converting in order to win these type of games. This weekend overall is a good starting spot for the season.”
CSUB returns to the poll next Saturday at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. The Roadrunners face No. 20 Wagner at 10:30 a.m. and have a rematch with Cal at 2:20 p.m.
