DAVIS, Calif.—Junior Brian Charles made his first career goal a memorable one as the Temecula native scored in the 108th minute to give CSU Bakersfield a 2-1 double overtime victory over UC Davis Friday night.

“Tonight was a character win,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant.

An Adam Arana corner kick went off the back of an Aggies' defender in the 32nd minute for an own goal and a 1-0 CSUB lead. Matt Barringer tied the score for UC Davis at 63:00 when his shot was partially deflected and went into the CSUB net.  

UC Davis had a chance to win the match in regulation, but Kristian Heptner's attempt went wide with four seconds remaining in the second half.  The Aggies took the only two shots of the first overtime. Both attempts went high.

1:28 into the second overtime, Matt Wiesenfarth's header went towards the CSUB goal where Roadrunner goalie Nicolas Clever made the save.  Charles' game winner was a shot from the top of the box that went into the goal past the left post.

“Brian came up big for us,” Grant said. “He did a great job of winning the ball back and finishing his chance very well. This was a positive response from our program.”

The Aggies (0-3) outshot the Roadrunners (1-1) 12-3 in the first half and 24-8 for the match. Only nine of the UC Davis shots were on goal. Clever made eight saves. CSUB held a 5-4 corner kick advantage.

The Roadrunners head to Sacramento State for a 1 p.m. kick. CSU Bakersfield opens at home Sept. 11 when the Roadrunners host Loyola Marymount at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
