TEMPE, Ariz.—Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) and Kristen Jensen (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) became the 18th and 19th CSU Bakersfield water polo players to score at least 100 career goals, but the Roadrunners fell to No. 9 San Jose State 15-7 in the consolation round of the MPSF Tournament.
Barrett's 100th goal came on a penalty shot with 4:36 to play in the first quarter. Barrett ended the day with two goals. Jensen scored twice with her 100th coming in the fourth quarter. The Spartans' (20-9) Clara Espar Llaquet broke the San Jose State school record for most goals in a match with nine. Rae Lekness added three goals for the Spartans.
San Jose State led 4-2 after the first quarter and took a 7-3 lead into halftime. Espara Llaquet scored four of the Spartans' goals in the third quarter as San Jose State shutout the Roadrunners (12-17) 5-0. Bridgette Souza (R-Sr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) scored two of her team high three goals in the fourth quarter. CSUB outscored the Spartans 4-3 in the final stanza.
"It was a tough way to end the season," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "We're in the best conference in the country. I"m really proud of the way this team has played all year. They work hard every day and they never gave up. We'll miss our two seniors, Janelle and Bridgette. I'm excited about the progress that has been made in the group that's coming back next year."
